No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead. Philippians 3:13
Maturing in life requires the ability to unlearn non-productive habits just as much as you are required to learn new habits.
Your habits around money were generally given to you as a child. You overheard your parents talking about not having enough money to stretch through the month. You saw them finance everything that could be financed. You took on their views about work, education, and retirement.
But what do you really want for your life?
As believers in Christ, God’s plan is for you to be like Christ in every area of your life, including your money mindset.
You have the help of the Holy Spirit to start to envision and experience a life of freedom from financial stress. You have the power to walk the narrow path that leads to financial outcomes that you have never seen in your community.
If you are truly ready to start allowing God to change your financial mindset, the perfect place to start is in the Bible.
Biblical wisdom is the electrical current that flows through every believer to produce the light of Christ in the world.
Once you have spent time reflecting on what the Bible says about you as a steward and the purposes of healthy stewardship, you can choose between many different financial planning roadmaps to learn the practical steps needed for change.
I have benefited greatly from Dave Ramsey’s Baby Steps plan. This plan does not shy away from the reality that it is derived from Biblical principles.
The one thing I would caution you about with the Baby Steps plan is that it encourages you to do the steps as fast as possible. Of course, there are benefits to saving and getting out of debt quickly. (This is a Biblical principle.) However, just like with any other learned and engrained behaviors, unhealthy money habits require sincere attention when uprooting them from your life. It is beneficial to recognize your triggers that lead you to mismanage your money so that you know how to navigate future challenges. If this process is glossed over, you could inadvertently sabotage your journey to financial wellness.
The cycles of debt and lack are not a part of your story anymore. You will learn and grow into a woman of faith who seeks God for all financial wisdom. You will transform your financial mindset, starting with the Word of God.
Here are 7 Bible verses to get you started on allowing the Scriptures to transform your mind around financial wellness as a believer in Christ.
1 Corinthians 2:12- And we have received God’s Spirit (not the world’s Spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us.
2 Corinthians 9:8- And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.
Ephesians 4:24- Put on your new nature, created to be like God, truly righteous and holy.
1 Thessalonians 4:11-12- Make it your goal to live a quiet life, minding your own business and working with your hands, just as we instructed you before. Then, people who are not believers will respect the way you live, and you will not need to depend on others.
Romans 13:8- Owe nothing to anyone-except for your obligation to love one another. If you love your neighbor, you will fulfill the requirements of God’s law.
1 Timothy 5:8- But those who won’t care for their relatives, especially those in their own household, have denied the true faith. Such people are worse than unbelievers.
Galatians 5:1- So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law.
